Your elopement already isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the second you decide your dog is coming along, your timeline shouldn’t be either. Your Moab elopement should be built around creating a day that feels relaxed, intentional, and enjoyable for everyone involved, including your dog.

Before we even start building your timeline, there’s one decision you need to make first and I mean before anything else.
What role do you actually want your dog to play in your dog friendly Moab elopement?
I don’t want your quick, emotional answer here. I want your honest answer. Because there’s no “right” way to do this but there is a version that’s going to feel a lot better depending on your dog.
This is where I see couples get stuck when they’re planning their Moab elopement. They tell me: “Of course we want them there all day” or “We can’t imagine getting married without them.” Trust me, I get it. I’d say the exact same thing about my own dogs. But wanting your dog there all day and planning a day that actually supports that are two very different things.
Some dogs would happily spend all day, exploring, and soaking up every minute of your Moab elopement. Others would be much happier joining you for the most meaningful moments before heading somewhere cool, comfortable, and familiar for the rest of the day.
Neither option is better than the other.
The decision you make here will shape your entire timeline. It can be the difference between a day that feels relaxed and one that leaves everyone, including your dog, stressed and completely worn out.
Build Your Moab Elopement Timeline Around Your Dog
I mentioned earlier that one of the biggest mistakes I see couples make when planning a dog friendly Moab elopement is trying to fit their dog into a timeline made only for humans. Every dog is different, which means every dog friendly Moab elopement timeline should be different too.
Some dogs could happily spend the entire day exploring new trails and hopping in and out of the car. Others are perfectly content with a short walk before they’re ready to curl up for a nap. Neither is better. It just means your timeline should reflect the dog you’re bringing, not the dog you wish you had.

- Give yourselves a few minutes to sit together and enjoy the view. Let your dog explore, rest, or just exist in the moment with you.

It’s also about thinking through the little logistics that are easy to overlook until the wedding day is actually here. I know. Not the most exciting part of planning a dog friendly Moab elopement. Trust me though, it’s one of the most important.

- Who’s taking them back to your Airbnb if they’re ready for a nap while you’re still out adventuring?

- What if they decide they’re done hiking halfway through the day?

As a Moab elopement photographer,I’d much rather see a dog head back when they’re ready than spend the last few hours exhausted or overwhelmed. Your dog gets to enjoy the parts of the day they’ll actually love. You still get to experience everything you envisioned for your Moab elopement.
You’re happy, your dog’s happy, and that makes me happy.
The Dog Friendly Moab Elopement Timeline I Recommend Most
If you were one of my couples planning a dog friendly Moab elopement, this is the timeline I’d suggest.
It gives you the best of both worlds.
But before I go any further, I want to say this: don’t copy this timeline just because it worked for someone else.
Your dog has their own personality, energy level, and comfort zone. A dog who loves hiking for hours will need something completely different than a pup who thinks a mile walk is a big accomplishment. Both are completely okay.
That is exactly why I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all dog friendly elopement timeline. I work with my couples to create a day that feels right for them, their dog, and their adventure.
That being said, this is the type of timeline I love creating because it gives you the best of both worlds. Your dog gets to be part of the adventure without having to keep up with every single moment of the day. You get those meaningful memories together while still having space to slow down and experience your Moab elopement as a couple.
Here’s what that can look like:
A Morning With Your Pup: Getting Ready, First Looks, and Exploring
I love starting the day with your pup included in getting ready photos. These are usually some of my favorite moments because they are so real. Your dog knows something exciting is happening. They watch you get ready and are part of those quiet moments before the adventure begins.
Then we head out for either your first look or some exploring on dog-friendly Moab BLM land. Your pup gets to explore the desert. They can sniff every single thing (because obviously they have to) and be part of those first moments together. We can take photos with your dog and explore together. Then we’ll set aside time for just the two of you.
This is something I think is really important. Your dog can be included without every single photo needing to include your dog. Your Moab elopement is still about the two of you. This is where having a dog wedding attendant can be such a game changer. While you get to focus on each other they are focused on your pup.
Slow Down and Enjoy the Moments In Between
From there, I love adding in those little moments that make the day feel like your actual life. Maybe we grab lunch at Milt’s and get your pup a pup cup. We find a quiet spot to sit and take a break. You get to soak in the fact that you’re actually here doing this. These slower moments are what make your day feel like an experience instead of just a checklist of locations.
After exploring, we head to your ceremony spot. One of the best parts about eloping in Moab is having so many incredible places where your dog can be part of the day. Your pup can stand beside you while you exchange vows. They can celebrate with you and be included in those just-married photos.
Sunset Photos, Dog Breaks, and Continuing the Adventure
Then comes my favorite part: sunset. We’ll take photos with your pup because of course they deserve their moment. Then we’ll also take time for just the two of you. Again, this is where having a dog wedding attendant becomes such a huge help.
Once your dog has had their adventure, they can head back with your dog wedding attendant. They’ll get dinner and a cozy place to relax while you continue your evening. I love this, not because I want your dog gone. The complete opposite.
I love this because your dog gets to be part of the day in a way that works for them. They got the adventure, the memories, and all the attention. Now they get to relax while you continue your Moab elopement experience.
From there, you can slow down even more. You can watch the sunset on your first day as a married couple. Spend some quiet time together, go stargazing, or enjoy dinner. Whatever feels most like you.
As a Moab elopement photographer, this is the type of day I love helping couples create. It keeps the chaos at bay. You’re not constantly wondering if your dog is okay or trying to force them to keep going when they’re tired. Instead, everyone gets what they need. Your dog gets to be a dog and you get to be fully present.
What to Know About Moab National Parks and Dog Friendly Elopements
Before you start planning your dog friendly Moab elopement, there is one important thing you need to know about the national parks. Dogs are not allowed on most trails or backcountry areas in Arches National Park or Canyonlands National Park.
I know this is disappointing, especially when you were dreaming about your pup standing beside you under those iconic arches. Here’s the good news: this does not mean you can’t have a dog friendly Moab elopement. It just means we need to plan your day a little differently.
You Can Still Have a Dog Friendly Moab Elopement
If your dream Moab elopement includes exploring Arches or Canyonlands, we can absolutely make that happen. We just need to build a timeline that lets you enjoy those locations without your pup. Then they can join the adventure later.
For example, we could start your morning with a sunrise first look inside one of the parks. Then we can meet back up with your dog afterward. We can spend the rest of the day adventuring together on dog-friendly BLM land. We’ll find overlooks, explore trails, and create the moments that make your day feel like yours.
The best part about this type of timeline? Those in-between moments can become some of the most fun parts of your day. You spend the morning exploring the national parks and then meet your pup for a Jeep adventure. Or you can grab lunch in town, take a scenic drive, or go cycling. You can even add another adventure you’ve always wanted to try before your dog joins you.
Your dog friendly Moab elopement does not have to mean your dog is with you every single second. It means your dog is included in the parts of the day where they can safely enjoy the adventure.
This is not like a traditional wedding where you feel like you have to sacrifice to make everyone happy. You don’t have to choose between your dog and your dream Moab elopement. We create a day where your dog, your adventure, and your relationship all have a place.
Things That Can Make Your Dog Friendly Moab Elopement Timeline Harder Than It Needs to Be
When you’re planning a dog friendly Moab elopement, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of bringing your pup along. Sometimes the little details get forgotten. You’re picturing your dog running through the desert and standing beside you during your vows. You want them to be part of the adventure.
But your dog doesn’t know they’re in Moab. They don’t know they’re standing in one of the coolest landscapes in the country. They just know if they’re comfortable, tired, hot, hungry, or ready for a break.
Ignoring these next few things can take your Moab elopement and turn it upside down.
Trying to Do Too Much
One of the biggest things that can make a dog friendly Moab elopement feel stressful is trying to fit in too many locations.
Your dog doesn’t need six different viewpoints. They don’t care if you checked every location off your list. They just want to be with you.
Sometimes the best moments happen when you slow down. Let your dog explore, take a break, and actually enjoy where you are. A shorter, intentional adventure will always beat a rushed day where everyone is exhausted.
Forgetting About the Desert Weather
Moab is gorgeous but it is a desert. Depending on the time of year, your pup may deal with hot temperatures, warm rocks, direct sun, or long stretches without shade. This is why your timeline matters so much.
A summer Moab elopement means starting earlier in the morning or planning around sunset. A spring or fall Moab elopement, especially later in the season like November, gives you more flexibility. You’ll have more comfortable temperatures and time outside.
All that said, you still want to pay attention to your dog’s energy and comfort. Always bring plenty of water, plan for breaks, and give your dog time to cool down. They are trusting you to take care of them.

Not Packing for Your Dog
Your dog doesn’t need their entire house packed into the car. There are a few things I never want couples to forget.
Things like:
- extra water and a collapsible bowl
- treats
- leash and backup leash
- poop bags
- a towel or blanket for breaks
- any medications they need
- a favorite toy or comfort item
The goal isn’t to bring your entire house with you. It’s just about having the basics that will help your pup have a great day too. If something gets left behind, don’t stress. Between me and your dog wedding attendant, we’ll have extra supplies on hand to help make sure your pup is taken care of.
Assuming Your Dog Will Want to Go All Day
This one is probably the biggest. Your dog may surprise you.
I know this firsthand with Bodhi. She is your typical high-energy, crazy Aussie who always seems ready for the next adventure. But even she has surprised me more than once. I’ve taken her hiking, and she’ll come home completely exhausted and ready to sleep for the rest of the evening.
But then there’s the other side of Bodhi. This is the same dog who hiked 17 miles with me. She slept the entire 20-minute drive home. Then the second I sat down, she dropped her Chuckit ball in my lap like, “Okay, I’m ready.” Let’s go again.”
Dogs are funny like that. You think you know exactly how they’ll handle something, and then they completely surprise you. Your adventure-loving pup could be ready for a nap after a couple hours. Your couch potato could also surprise you and become the biggest explorer you’ve ever seen. (This is my Maui. He would happily snuggle on the couch all day, but put him on a trail and suddenly he’s Mountain Maui.)
You won’t always know until you’re there, and that’s okay.
