You’ve planned every detail—down to the last cupcake flavor and getting-ready playlist.
But when the big day rolls around, it’s shockingly easy to float through it in a blur. That’s why one of the best wedding planning tips I give couples as a wedding+ elopement photographer is this: make space to actually be there. Emotionally. Mentally. Fully.
Here’s how to slow down, stay grounded, and soak up every minute of your wedding day magic.

Build In Breathing Room
The biggest timeline killer? Stress. When you’re racing from hair and makeup to portraits to the ceremony, it’s hard to be present—you’re just trying not to trip over your heels. That rush-y feeling shows up in your body language, your mood, and yep, your wedding photos. The best days have a little cushion built in.
How to do it: Add at least 10–15 minutes of buffer between big events: getting ready, first look, travel time, etc. That extra time gives you space to snack, sip water, breathe, regroup, or even just stare lovingly at your dog in a flower collar.

Unplug Like You Mean It
Your notifications don’t belong in your bouquet. Constant buzzing pulls you out of the magic and into texts like “Where’s the parking lot again?” or “What time do speeches start?” And once you go down the scroll hole, it’s hard to come back up.
How to do it: Choose a trusted friend to be your “phone bodyguard.” Give them your phone and empower them to filter emergencies. Let your wedding party, vendors, and family know ahead of time that you’re going off-grid—because you’re busy getting married and living your best life.

Create Moments That Are Just Yours
With a full guest list and packed timeline, it’s easy to spend the whole day surrounded by people—but never really with each other. And at the end of the day, this is your love story. Make sure it actually feels like yours.
How to do it: Plan in a moment (or two) for just the two of you. That could be a first look before the ceremony, a quiet moment after the ceremony to take it all in, or a golden hour escape while guests hit the cocktail bar. These little breathers let you reconnect and soak up what’s happening.

Make the Morning Yours
The energy you begin with tends to follow you throughout the day. A calm, joy-filled morning sets the stage for a more grounded, present experience—while a chaotic one can leave you feeling frazzled before your shoes are even on.
How to do it: Start slow and keep it personal. Play a feel-good playlist (bonus points for early 2000s throwbacks), sip your favorite coffee or tea, and surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Light a candle. Say a little affirmation. Heck, do a mini yoga session if that’s your vibe. The key is to create a space where you feel like yourself—not like a checklist.

Hire a Wedding Coordinator (Seriously!)
You should be sipping champagne, not sprinting around trying to find the cake knife or answering the florist’s last-minute text. A great coordinator takes the behind-the-scenes chaos and turns it into calm, letting you stay in the moment and enjoy your own party.
How to do it: Even if you’re handling the planning yourself, a day-of coordinator is an absolute game-changer. They’ll manage timelines, vendor arrivals, setup questions, and guest hiccups—so you don’t have to.

Let’s Make Sure You Feel the Day (Not Just Rush Through It)
You’ve done the planning, picked the playlist, and maybe cried over your wedding shoes—now it’s time to actually enjoy the day. I’m not just here to snap pretty pics (though we’ll get plenty of those). I’m here to help you live it, moment by moment.
So if you’re into wedding photos that feel as good as they look—and a Pittsburgh wedding photographer who’s all about slowing the scroll and the day…
